I clicked on the dmg and I see a FrontPanel window popup with API, Samples, Documentation folders and a FrontPanel app… Am I supposed to copy these to the Applications folder?

You can, but you don’t have to. The application will run from anywhere, including the volume mounted on your desktop when you opened the disk image.
By the way, I’ve posted a few times related to OS X. I have made reference to a “Mac”, but not to the OS since there is currenly no ambiguity. Maybe I should include “OS X” in the future for search purposes.
